By Chance
‘now if by chance,
I should worship the fish,
who jumped in the sea from yonder star,
to life’s tree
and if by chance
I should honour the ape,
who lost in the clay
the deeds of His D – N – A
or if by chance
I should bow to a god,
who won grand design
with Einstein’s dice,
in our time
leave me alone to mate
and fashion by chance
my fate
and careful thought atone
for if by chance
a Grand Voice be not heard
over loud disdain,
on pain of death proclaim –
I AM by chance, ALONE
